The Stonesfield Carpet

The Stonesfield Mosaic was destroyed soon after its discovery in the eighteenth century. Probably a domestic production piece which may been designed by a professional.

The carpet was probably commissioned by John Strachey F.R.S. (1671-1742), who travelled all over the country visiting local historical societies and investigating records. The work has been in the Strachey family until its acquisition by Jonathan Harris.

The carpet was purchased with the Art Fund and The Friends Of The Oxfordshire Museum.
